About Public Transportation Safety International Corp.

PTS has been in business for over 20 years, producing the S-1 GARD Dangerzone Deflector for transit buses, which is a widely-deployed safety product designed to deflect a person out of the path of the wheels. It is installed on bus fleets around the world in cities such Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and Stockholm, among many others, and has been praised for mitigating fatalities and catastrophic injuries.

Thank you for your interest in the MDZ Shield

The MDZ Shield is a casted, high-performance urethane shield that acts as a physical barrier in front of the rear dual wheels of school buses, helping prevent rollover fatalities and minimizing injuries. There are two editions of the MDZ Shield available: the Undermount system, and the new Side Mount system.

The Undermount version of the MDZ Shield has been installed in five states in the u.s. in this configuration, receiver mounts are mounted to the floor crossmember (or other chassis support), and has proven to be both highly durable and effective.

For 2015, PTS has developed a new Side Mount receiver mounting system, which lessens both material and labor costs while making it easily visible for inspection. PTS has road-tested and durability-tested this new Side Mount system. Some notable features and their specifications:

  • A 1/4″ cold-rolled steel vertical receiver plate easily bolts to the bus rocker panel using six 1/2-13 grade 8 bolts, each with a flat washer, lock washer, and nylon lock nut. This is reinforced with a support plate behind the rocker panel, strengthening the rocker panel. The lower part of the plate is perforated with permanent holes encapsulated in the urethane guard, requiring no maintenance. This design allows easy installation and operator’s inspection.
  • Unlike rim-processed urethane, which can be prone to cracking (e.g. automobile bumpers), the guard is made of casted BASF urethane. It is approximately 3/4″ thick, and is guaranteed for the life of the bus.
  • A guard protector rides approximately 3 inches from the road surface, at the bottom of the shield, featuring a wear indicator one inch from the bottom. This indicator can be used to gauge if an MDZ Shield requires replacement (although this is unlikely). Both the guard and the guard protector feature a thickness of 95 A Durometer.

Once mounted, ‘the MDZ Shield is guaranteed for the life of the bus, excluding rear tire failure and collisions. its firm, durable finish is resistant to scratches, cracking, peeling, UV rays, and dust, and can withstand any road condition or terrain, in any season. PTS, through its warranty, will replace the MDZ Shield, including tabor and material, at no cost, for a damaged MDZ Shield or for body damage to the rocker panel where the receiver is mounted.
